Description
This is as good as it gets. I was very fortunate to aquire this remarkable J.M. Brunswick and Balke monarch table from a 4th generation family in upstate New York that has been kept in almost "too good to be true" condition all these years. Hard to believe but the cast iron lion head legs have the factory original finish on them. All I had to do was clean the 120 years of dirt off and put a couple coats of clear finish on them to freshen them up and you get the natural patina of all those years. Every part and componant has the same factory production number and even all the slate screws and bolts are original. The table has had all the old candied varnish removed by hand and a new lacquer finish was carefully applied to bring out the beauty of all the hand inlaid marquetry. The base wood is Burl Olive Ash veneer with inlays of Tulipwood, Maple and Brazilian Rosewood. The rail tops are the original brazilian Rosewood with all the original ivory diamonds except one, which I replaced. The slates are 1 inch thick and there is 4 pieces. The wood inserts for the pockets are in perfect condition. The framing is all perfect with no damaged parts and I have repainted the inside for a nice touch. I took these pictures substituting a pocket from a different table but the original pocket irons are being replated and reproduction pockets will be sewn on exactly as this table looked in 1880. Pool table guys will recognize that this table might well have been a carom table initially because the end rails only have two rail bolts. That seems quite possible to me as well but this is the way I got it and the family says their great grandfather bought it like this more than 100 years ago. I still need to put new cushions on the rails and I'll be using master speed cushions for a lively bounce. I'll also upgrade the rail bolt caps to the best replicas available. The originals are not the best. Look at the interesting nameplate on the head rail. I have never seen this nameplate nor has anybody else I know in the business. Everything about this table is simply fantastic and truly fit for a King. I have a matching Monarch Cue rack that is even more rare than the table. It will be sold seperately if the buyer is interested. I have had 4 different Monarchs is about 20 years of restoring antique pool tables and none was better than this one. The most outstanding element here is the originality of virtually every part. These are getting harder to find and I have been searching for a Monarch for nearly 3 years because I had customers who wanted one. Alas, they found tables from other parties or changed their mind about a table and now I am offering this gem to the world.
